For business production we do recommend a subscription: it gives access to the stable Enterprise Repository with tested updates and security fixes, and to technical support from the vendor. We pick the level based on how critical the workloads on the platform are.
Proxmox Virtual Environment is licensed per populated CPU socket of each server in the cluster, Proxmox Backup Server per server. A subscription runs for one year from activation; with a voucher you can lock in the price for up to 5 years. All servers in one cluster should have the same level.
